Our History

The Sandstrom company was started in January 1960 by Al & Corrine Sandstrom.  Al came to Grand Rapids from Duluth every week in a cash wagon to establish his routes and would return home on the weekends to refill his truck and spend time with family. By March of that year, Al had developed enough business to move to his family to Grand Rapids. In a home they had rented, Al & Corrine began to build an up and coming business. Three years later while the business continued to grow, the need for space and employees did as well, so the Sandstrom's purchased a home with a three stall garage that they turned into a warehouse. Al increased his routes while Corrine's pick up business grew.

In 1969, their son David returned from the military to work in the family business developing more routes. Shortly after, the Sandstrom's purchased a building with 3000 square feet which housed the newly acquired vending and amusement business as well as the growing distibution portion of the Al Sandstrom Company. David's wife Mary also joined the Sandstrom team and the number of employees increased from 2 to 10 in a short period of time.

The 80's brought many new, exciting changes to the company. Spring buying shows were and still are held annually, we entered the retail grocery business as well as the institutional food business and started to distribute the full line of Bridgeman dairy products which made the Al Sandstrom Company the most complete distributor in the midwest. In 1990, we built our new facility in LaPrairie and changed our name to Sandstrom's. David and Mary's daughter, Julie, joined the Sandstrom team in 1992 and son, Dean, in 1996. Today, the family company employs over 60 people and continues to grow, servicing greater Minnesota and the Western edge of Wisconsin.

By March of 1960, Al had developed enough business in the Grand Rapids Area that he and Corrine rented a home at 2613 McKinney Lake Road (Hwy 38) and used the one stall garage as their first warehouse. She received freight and developed a pick up point for customers off of Al’s route while he took to the road. They were only in this house for 3 short years before they had to move into a home with a larger, 3 stall garage located at 702 3rd Ave North in Grand Rapids .
